Energy Supply Sector

Energy supply is to commerce and industry what water is to life. Insufficient or intermittent energy cripples production and has a negative effect on the economy.

Confronting the Energy Crisis: Actions to end load shedding and achieve energy security

The Chamber’s newly established Energy portfolio will address matters that impede the growth of businesses affected by the current state of energy supply in South Africa.

The Western Cape is taking the lead in the fast-growing oil and gas industry, thanks partly to its strategic location and the benefit of three well-located Ports – Cape Town, Saldanha and Mossel Bay. Offshore prospecting and pipeline developments have played a major role in growing the regional economy, particularly in the southern Cape with the establishment of Mossgas (now PetroSA).

The province is also positioning itself as the regional champion of the green energy economy, with notable success in the production of composite wind turbines and other green energy components. Utility-scale Independent Power Producers (IPPs) in the Western Cape have produced a significant volume of renewable energy since the start of the National Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme – a total of 8 272 GWh. This sector enjoys the enthusiastic support of provincial leadership in light of the current power crisis.
