Philippi East Industrial Chapter
The Philippi East Industrial Chapter is a newfound Cape Chamber Chapter, it is a progression from the wosaPhilippi Business Forum, which consisted of 19 out of the approximately 37 businesses in the area.
The Philippi East Industrial and Commercial zone has been in existence for more than 70 years. It has always been an area of great potential given its proximity to major roads, the airport and a ready workforce, situated in a seemingly perfect economic environment for business development, expansion and distribution of product.
Up until the early 90’s, it was well on its way to becoming one of the most prosperous business areas in Cape Town. With our typical urbanisation trends in South Africa, the population has seen significant growth, resulting in informal settlements being established within and around the Industrial area. Consequently, the area became congested, and crime ridden, stunting the growth of many businesses and resulting in the closure and departure of others.
This Chapter aims to address these challenges and make it safe and attractive to do business in the Philippi East Industrial area again.
The Chamber supports the local area’s development by:
- Mobilising relevant stakeholders, including Government, to come together to solve problems in our area.
- Championing easy access and well-maintained roads that will assist with the safety of staff and customers, and for the delivery and collection of stock in the economic hubs, where employment is created.
- Fostering business retention and expansion programmes - for firms to express their concerns about issues affecting business in the area, and to steer systematic improvement of their local business environment.
- Ensuring participation in the regional sector and value chain development programmes.
