Athlone and the Cape Flats Chapter: A hub of business opportunity and culture

The Athlone Chapter of the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry, nestled in the heart of the Cape Flats, stands as a testament to resilience, diversity, and great entrepreneurial spirit. This thriving cultural hub not only hosts an overabundance of diverse businesses from backyard to well-established businesses but is also home to a tightly-knit and multifaceted community.

Under the leadership of Rabia Achmat and co-leader Saadiqah Barends, along with dedicated committee members Mary-Jean Thomas-Johnson and Ryan Thys, the Chapter proudly hosts events and webinars focused on youth empowerment, skills development, and the inclusion of persons with disabilities.

The Athlone Chapter encompasses a wide array of areas, including the Athlone CBD, Gatesville, Rylands, Kewtown, Bridgetown, Hazendal, Belgravia, Wetton, Langa, Gugulethu, and more. Despite the communities in the Chapter grappling with challenges like poverty, unemployment, and crime, the Athlone and Cape Flats communities continue to exemplify the spirit of triumph over adversity, with countless success stories emerging from this resilient enclave.

Athlone's industrial area has witnessed the growth and success of numerous businesses, many of which have stood the test of time for decades.

In Athlone, one can find fundamentally anything one needs within its bustling business landscape, from hairdressers to butchers, furniture stores to popular eateries serving delectable Cape Malay and Indian cuisine.

The Joseph Stone Auditorium, which has been home to the Eoan Group School of Performing Arts since 1968 (established in 1933), has played a pivotal role in providing youth with an artistic escape from the socio-economic challenges that the area faces.

Another prominent landmark, the Athlone Stadium, has hosted a diverse range of events, including international and local sporting competitions, as well as school and community gatherings.
