Mining Indaba success is a sign of economic recovery and business appetite
The Cape Chamber of Commerce & Industry is heartened by the success of this year’s Mining Indaba, which returned to the Cape Town International Convention Centre this week after a two-year absence.
The impressive attendance figures confirm our view that the business sector is rearing to go in the wake of economic disruptions caused by Covid-19. Although the pandemic is by no means over, the turnout at the CTICC is testimony to an underlying appetite for business engagement. The rejuvenated event also represents a welcome boost for Cape Town’s tourism and events sector which has been particularly affected by lockdowns and travel restrictions.
The Mining Indaba is the world’s largest African mining investment, bringing together business leaders in both the public and private sectors. It contributes around R177m to the South African GDP and generates over 250 fulltime jobs.
It is fantastic to see the event thriving again – it is a flagship event for Cape Town. We can see that people are once again eager to participate in face-to-face events. Going forward, we expect to see something of a rebound for events and tourism as people start moving around more freely.
The knock-on effects of a large event like the Mining Indaba are huge right across the board, from retail and hospitality to transport and tourism.
We wish to commend the organisers of this year’s event for reminding everybody that Cape Town, and South Africa in general, is very much open for business.
