UCT says South Africa Set for Record IPP Capacity Additions in 2026 Following Unprecedented First-Half Growth

South Africa is on track to record its strongest-ever year for Independent Power Producer (IPP) capacity additions, according to research from the Power Futures Lab at the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business, reported by Engineering News. 

 

A total of 4,123 megawatts (MW) of new IPP capacity is projected to enter commercial operation in 2026, marking a massive surge in private and utility-scale energy generation across the national grid. 

 

During the first six months of the year, 17 IPP projects with a combined capacity of 1,920 MW reached commercial operation. This represents the highest capacity ever added in a single half-year period and has already surpassed South Africa's previous full-year record of 1,472 MW set in 2016. 

 

An additional 28 projects totaling 2,202 MW are scheduled to begin operations during the second half of the year. If completed on schedule, total annual additions will be more than double the country’s previous record. 

 

Private procurement drove much of the first-half performance, with 10 projects generating 1,046 MW directly to power mining operations and industrial consumers. The remaining seven projects (874 MW) stemmed from government initiatives, including Bid Windows 5 and 6 of the Renewable Energy IPP Procurement Programme and the Risk Mitigation programme. 

 

Wind energy played a central role in the surge, with seven new wind farms contributing 815 MW to the grid. The majority of projects entering service this year successfully reached financial close in 2024, demonstrating strong private-sector momentum in stabilizing South Africa’s power infrastructure.
