Public Comment Opens for Cape Town’s 2026 Transport Plan Update

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate has formally opened a 30-day public comment period on its draft Comprehensive Integrated Transport Plan (CITP) 2026 Update, offering local businesses a crucial window to shape regional transport strategy. 

Running from 1 to 30 September 2026, the public participation process allows private sector stakeholders to review and influence the City’s intermediate transport framework before the upcoming New-Term-of-Office Integrated Development Plan triggers a full plan overhaul. 

This second annual update to the core CITP 2023–2028 incorporates fresh data on current transit services, demographic shifts, and updated transport needs assessments. Crucially for commercial operators and manufacturers, the draft integrates several recently approved municipal strategies, including the Integrated Public Transport Network Plan 2040, the updated Freight Management Strategy, and the Travel Demand Management Strategy. 

According to the City, the 2026 update focuses heavily on diagnosing central transport bottlenecks, aligning infrastructure planning to support economic development at priority precincts, and strengthening mechanisms for spatial restructuring across the metro. 

"The update considers new information, latest thinking, and changes in plans, projects, programmes, and budgets," the Urban Mobility Directorate noted, adding that the document also addresses progress on major capital projects and feedback from the Western Cape Mobility Ministry.
