Civil work complete on R650m GrandWest Mall ahead of construction launch
Developers of the R650-million GrandWest Mall say civil engineering work is now complete across the 22 000 m² shopping centre site, with an official sod-turning ceremony scheduled for later this month, the project team confirmed this week.
The mega Cape Town development is expected to create roughly 2,500 jobs during the construction phase and secure 2,000 permanent jobs upon completion in 2027. It is designed to accommodate around 70 tenants, with between 50 and 60 already confirmed, including Checkers FreshX, Dis-Chem, Clicks, Mr Price Group, and a 2,500 m² Halaal SuperSpar
A notable feature of the new development is that it connects to GrandWest’s redeveloped children’s entertainment hub (including the Magic Company and Ten Pin Bowling).
GrandWest Mall is co-owned by Flanagan & Gerard and Sun International.
GrandWest is already one of Cape Town’s biggest entertainment destinations. First opened in December 2000, the complex currently comprises an 11,000 m² casino, a 5,400-seat multi-purpose indoor arena, conference facilities, and two hotels (the Grand Hotel and the City Lodge). It also features a Cine Centre, Cape Town’s only ice rink, and a variety of restaurants and eateries.
The Grand Hotel recently underwent a R125-million extension and upgrade.
