Breaking Barriers: Design26 empowers unemployed youth in Mitchells Plain

In the heart of Mitchells Plain, a remarkable social enterprise known as Design26 is paving the way for a brighter future for unemployed youth and women who are affected by teenage pregnancies.

Design26, known for its exclusive women’s clothing line, is not just about fashion, they are on a mission to combat unemployment in the community by providing employment opportunities through nurturing of young talent and empowering the youth of Mitchells Plain by offering them a chance to build a career and overcome the obstacles they face.

“As a social enterprise, our primary focus is addressing the issue of unemployment,” said Suraya Williams, founder of Design26.

“As far as our products are concerned, we focus on affordable breastfeeding wear,” she said.

Suraya’s journey with Design26 began after the loss of her mother, who was a dressmaker in their local community. Following in her footsteps, Suraya formed a team of six contract workers whom she personally helps to develop their sewing skills through a comprehensive foundation program.

“We prioritize employing young individuals from Mitchells Plain, many of whom lack skills and opportunities,” said Suraya.

“By offering them employment, we aim to provide a pathway for personal and professional growth. It's disheartening to see how some of these skills are affected by teenage pregnancies, further limiting their options,” she added.

And, while her focus is on the local market, she recognizes the potential to expand internationally.

“Participating in the Global Export Accelerator Program (GEAP) will greatly benefit our business, enhancing both our brand and brand name recognition.

“Even if we are unable to sell our products overseas, the programme will undoubtedly contribute to our growth and reputation,” she said.
