The Economic & Finance Portfolio Committee will be hosting a meeting with South Africa’s Tax Ombud – Judge Bernard Ngoepe and a SARS representative.

Judge Ngoepe has acted as Judge President to the High Court of South Africa as well as the North and South Gauteng High Courts. He has also heard & decided seminal cases – including business and tax matters and was responsible for assigning Judges to the Tax Courts. He has also acted as a Constitutional Court Judge and a Judge to the Supreme Court of Appeal.

The objective of the meeting is to discuss the current national tax regime, tax compliance, tax morality, as well as addressing taxpayers’ rights & responsibilities. Attendees will be informed on how to effectively escalate tax complaints and the way forward.

According to the 11th annual edition of the Tax Statistics: In 2017/18, for the first time since the 2008 global financial crisis, tax revenue growth did not exceed the nation’s GDP growth. It is thus more important than ever – as individuals, businesses, trusts, employers and VAT vendors to adhere to our national tax regime and be compliant.

According to the 2017/18 Tax Ombud Annual Report, 3 652 tax-related complaints were received. The majority of taxpayers whose complaints were captured resided in Gauteng (65.65%), followed by the Western Cape (14.15%).

An opportunity will be given to business to address their tax-related queries and concerns.
