Justice Malala, controversial political commentator and author, has agreed to step into the ring to face the Minister of Finance, Mr Pravin Gordhan, in the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s second Rumble in the Urban Jungle.
He replaces, combatant RW Johnson, renowned political commentator and historian, was has been knocked out by the savage ‘flu epidemic that has struck Cape Town.
The last-minute replacement means that the Rumble will still take place as scheduled at the Westin Hotel in Cape Town on Wednesday night.
We have been extraordinary lucky to find such a worthy opponent for the Minister at such short notice.
Mr Malala and R W Johnson have a lot in common. Both have recently written books predicting critical times ahead for the country. The Johnson book is titled “How long will South Africa survive?” while Mr Malala’s book says “We have now begun our descent”.
We think we are in for an even more exciting debate. RW Johnson represents a more academic approach and his views are measured while Justice Malala is much closer to the political scrap now taking place.
What makes it all the more interesting is that the clash takes place in the wake of the local government elections which have produced a major shift in the political landscape. We are expecting some dynamite punches.
The Chamber has organised the debate to bring the realities of our low-growth economy to its members and business leaders. We have an economy faltering on the brink of recession and the structural changes we need don’t seem to be happening.
We are convinced that at the end of the Rumble the audience will be better informed about the choices that lie ahead and have a better understanding of the forces at work in our economy. We hope it will give business leaders the information and the courage to make some tough decisions.
At the same time it will illuminate opportunities for business and live up to our mantra – “Where opportunity meets”.
The two-round bout will be followed by a question and answer session
